Modern Warfare 3 Gameplay Trailer Leaked

Viral marketing campaign and flood of leaks continue

By Alex Gralski on 5/23/2011
As recent viral marketing campaign for Modern Warfare 3 moves onward - the uninitiated might want to follow the link displayed in the dogtags below - we've received a leak of the seemingly official gameplay trailer. It's right above these words, and it's almost as entertaining as the story of the game's development! In the interest of recapping the story for all of you reading this, there's no time like the present (especially what with all the advertising and leaks).

Modern Warfare 3 has been a source of endless entertainment since long before it was officially announced; let's see if it's even possible to break down the timeline. First, there was the drama between Activision and the Infinity Ward head honchos that rivaled anything on daytime TV. Next, there was the news that the two heads of IW were gone from the studio. Then, West and Zampella - the (now former heads of IW) sought rights to Modern Warfare and a void ruling on their original contract, even while over 35 other employees were leaving the studio. As things arguably began to wind down, Activision struck back alleging sabotage on the part of Infinity Ward directed at Activision, but by that point I believe most of the people of Infinity Ward (a good number of whom were by that time with West and Zampanella's new studio Respawn) could barely make out their former employer in the rear-view.

Finally, after official announcement of the title and now that the court system can apparently move on from the counter-counter-counter suits that make cliche soap operas look tame, we've received some teaser trailers from official sources and the above gameplay trailer that leaked yesterday. This follows a week or two of viral marketing that provided little more than droplets of information scattered all about. In the interest of preserving your precious time (and certainly not because I'm still trying to understand all this nonsense myself), here's the breakdown:

As expected, the game will continue the story of Soap and Captain Price, as well as the ongoing conflict with Russia. You'll have the chance to play a number of different roles again, including but not necessarily limited to "Russian Federal Protective Services agent, SAS Operative, tank gunner, and AC-130 gunner." There's also a wide variety of locales, including New York, France, Iran, Germany, and Russia, among others.

The line-up for development makes about as much sense as the rest of this story - the war-torn remnants of Infinity Ward are working with Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software (both in-house Activision developers). It seems unlikely that they'll be able to avoid the feeling of committee design, but then again none of these studios are exactly rookies in the field, so who knows?

What's a bit more distressing is the amount of recycling. Those of you familiar with the franchise are probably already having flashbacks, to everything from the now-traditional AC-130 mission to some very-similar-looking AI and character models - though Infinity Ward is doing its best to dispel that notion, saying that it's been expanding the tech and addings lots of new things. Just exactly what those new things are will apparently have to wait. It is rather apparent however, that Battlefield 3 has a significant advantage with regards to graphics technology and next-gen engine features.  What's odd is that this trailer even seems to mimic the Inception-esque booming soundtrack of the Battlefield 3 footage we've seen thus far.  But far be it from me to criticize a game months before its allegedly scheduled November release, or even before its June reveal, so for the time being I'll leave that up to the comments section, and speculation. What are your thoughts on this game thus far?

I'm gonna play Single player, multiplayer and special ops because I think it's going to be a great game. I don't see so much changing with the graphic and I haven't seen so many new weapons, but still I think it's going to be fun.
I'm just welcoming a new game in to my collection.
