Yoshinori Kitase Speaks on Final Fantasy VII Remake

To Avoid Repetition and Making Cuts Final Fantasy XIII-2 Producer Wouldn't Want to Make A Sequel

By Nick Schneider on 11/28/2011
Whether it's Square Enix banging a distant drum for hype, or whether they really enjoy teasing Final Fantasy VII fans, the company simply will not let the discussion of a remake lay to rest.  The official comments are usually along the lines of, "There is no remake for the 1997 Playstation classic," and in an interview with Official Xbox Magazine Yoshinori Kitase, producer on Final Fantasy XIII-2 provides a possible explanation for why that is.

"If I may speak as a game creator, if we were to produce a remake of VII, for example, I would be really tempted to delete things and add new elements, new systems or whatever because if we were to make exactly the same thing now, it'd be like a repeat."

The reasoning is sound, avoid repetition while at the same avoiding fan rage, but there is little doubt that the remake would make millions.  Fans may continue to clamor for an HD renaissance, but there is a certain level of charm to Cloud's blocky hands and spiky polygonal hair.  Although dealing with mediocre companion-games is certainly not helping the demand from fans, nor is bringing up the topic every couple of months, for that matter.  Square has been pretty consistent in saying that there is no remake in process or even planned, which leaves fans left to download the game off PSN to relive their favorite moments.

I'm a big fan of final fantasy,VII especially, and I think a lot of people would like a remake(not a repeat) with new systems, something different.Anyway i'd be ecstatic if they do plan a remake, but I wouldn't really care if they didn't on the other hand, because in all fairness, there's a lot of competition between games these days, and I don't think a remake will come close to the new releases.(skyrim, saints row etc.)

to me personally the only way they might make money is if its DL content and/or an semi-expansion for the upcoming game. How it will fit in and why is another matter. Nowadays most game company are starting a trend of looking at the past hits and giving them a make over just to quiet the many fans. Its nice to see the old games of the past get the attention of the new games that know only of 360 and PS3.

I like this, and my personal opinion of remakes is that i don't like them. I am glad they're not just going to remake they're games because the know they can sell millions. If i want to play an old game i will just go play it, i don't need a remake, all that i need is that new consoles etc. that can be compatible with old games, or at least have them available for download in the online store.
