Tokyo Jungle: The Most Interesting E3 Game This Year?

Ever wanted to be a T. Rex and stomp around a ruined Tokyo? Now you can!

By Ben Harrison on 6/6/2012
While a number of high profile sequels are on display at E3 this year, it's always refreshing to see a brand new, unique idea for a game make its debut as well. This year, one of the more interesting titles being shown is Tokyo Jungle, in which you take control of one of several animals in a ruined remains of a near-future Tokyo.

Even though the extended trailer in the video above is in Japanese, the story is fairly simple: all of the humans have left the Earth, and the animals are starting to reclaim the planet. The big question, however, is what happened to all the people? Was it disease, famine, war, aliens, or something else entirely? In the story mode, you control a Pomeranian dog, fresh out of pet food in downtown Tokyo and out fending for itself, or a former racehorse, speeding through the city looking for one last race. Along the way, you begin to piece together just what exactly happened to all of the humans and just exactly how things became the way they were.

If playing as a small dog or a racehorse doesn't sound thrilling enough, don't fret. Those are the only two confirmed animals for the story mode, while the survival mode promises a much wider spectrum of animals to chose from. The confirmed list of animals for survival mode are lion, crocodile, tiger, giraffe, hippo, cheetah, chimpanzee, gazelle, chicken, beagle, tyrannosaurus, hyena, and fox. Yes, you read that right: you can control a tyrannosaurus rex and stomp around Tokyo, being the true king of the jungle.

The good news is that there's not a long wait for Tokyo Jungle's release, as it's due to be released tomorrow in Japan. The bad news, however, is that it's only going to be released on the Playstation 3 and there are currently no plans to translate the game and ship it outside of Japan. Here's hoping the game sells well enough to get a localization!

That sounds fun. Too bad there aren't plans for a US release yet. Keep us posted :)
