SDCC '11 Film Update: 'Battleship' Teaser Trailer

Battleship sunk! Coming to a theater near you...

To coincide with the official announcement at Comic-Con, Universal Pictures has released the first teaser trailer and official website for the upcoming film, Battleship, based off the Milton Bradley/Hasbro game of the same name.  Starring Taylor Kitsch (Gambit from X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker, and….Rihanna (um, yeah, expect a song by her on the soundtrack).

With a screenplay by Erich and Jon Hoeber (Red), and directed by Peter Berg, the film is a sci-fi action adventure about a U.S. naval fleet involved in a confrontation against an alien race called “The Regents.”  Alex Hopper (Kitsch) seeks to prove himself in the eyes of Admiral Shane (Neeson) for the favor of his fiancé, and Shane’s daughter, Sam (Decker).  With plenty of special effects (and the possibility of it being in 3D), the film plans on showing both perspectives of the battle, allowing audiences to see the ships as they are positioned in the board game.

I like Peter Berg as a director; Friday Night Lights and The Kingdom were pretty decent movies.  However, I just don’t think this movie is going to be very good.  James Cameron has already openly criticized the film calling it a direct example of a “story crisis” in Hollywood.  He continues by saying it is an act of pure desperation and that resorting to a board game for an original idea is a disgrace to cinema.  Now, without throwing the film under the bus before it is released, I think it deserves a chance.  Who knows, the next one they make could be Candy Land – and who wouldn’t want to see that?

I dont understand the translation from a "board game" where a modern military faces off against another modern military to this abomination of a politically correct garbage can full of poop. Whats the matter film industry? You cant have two earthly armies duking it out for "fun" on the high seas (the game was fun right?). I mean, who would you pick for the US fleet to destroy? How would that be perceived in the international community? Oh well. Plan B. Substitute opponent that USA destroys with alien force, PCness established.

Oh but wait, how will we capture that "guess and fire" feature that the entire game is based on if we toss in some aliens? I know!(says the intern), the aliens, they have radar jamming bubble technology see. This battle may be taking place on earth, but this bubble, it turns a small part of the ocean into the "game board", USA kills aliens, no one is offended and Liam Neeson smacks himself on the forehead.

What were you expecting? It's a movie, based on Battleship. Anyone who's anybody will be skipping this to see the Monopoly movie instead.

If we're lucky, we may get an UNO movie in the next decade as well. We can only hope...
