Saints Row: The Third Trailer Promises Over The Top Gameplay

Tired of serious shooters and sandboxes? Saints Row delivers something different

By Ben Harrison on 8/11/2011
A new trailer showing off eight minutes of gameplay from Saints Row: The Third was released today, and it's, well... something else. Keeping very much in the spirit of the previous games, the third title looks to pick up exactly where the second game left off. For those unfamiliar with the series, Saints Row: The Third will be a gang oriented sandbox game, akin to the Grand Theft Auto series, but that's about where the similarities end. While the Grand Theft Auto series has attempted to replicate some semblance of realism to each game, the Saints Row series has completely thrown all of that out the window in favor of a completely bonkers, off the wall, no holds barred sandbox of mayhem.

It's not uncommon to see people in fur suits attacking bystanders at random, or a morbidly obese gang trying to rob a bank in broad daylight.  It's about as ostensibly extreme as a game can get.  In fact, just for pre-ordering Saints Row: The Third, gamers will get a stuntman suit with a ridiculous cat head, a bazooka that shoots octopuses that latch onto enemies faces, and a car that can suck up pedestrians to then use as cannon fodder.

In the trailer below, we see the main figures of your gang, the Saints, tied down on an airplane being hustled into giving away most of their assets to a rival. Instead of agreeing to their terms, your gang decides to overthrow the plane, with rather explosive results. A good part of the mission involves your character free-falling, dodging debris, and shooting rival gang members at the same time.

After rescuing his girlfriend once, the lead character decides to let her free-fall yet again in order to attack the rival gang's boss, who is still on the plane. In one deft move, he manages to shoot out the plane's windshield, fly through the length of the plane, attack and kill the boss, fall out of the back of the plane, and catch his girlfriend once more. It's truly a sight to see, and has to be seen to be believed.  As an M-rated game, there is a bit of coarse language in the trailer, which is likely to be expected from any game that features psychedelic cat headdresses and octopus shooting bazookas.

Saints Row: The Third
is due to be released on November 15th for the PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3.

Looks even more over the top than Saints Row 2, I didn't think that was possible! But this makes me wonder what happened, Shundi and Gat are completely different, and where is Pierce at? I'm also not so sure about leaving the city I know and love behind, I know I'll be beating Saints Row 1 and 2 one more time before this comes out.

And I thought Saints Row 2 was amazing and over the top! Kinda disappointed Shaundi has a different voice though. Definitely have to pre-order this now after seeing that.
