PlayStation 4 Not Being Announced This Year
The PS3's "ten year lifespan" wasn't an idle boast.
Sony's consoles have all boasted particularly long lifespans. The PlayStation 3 has been no different, treading on ten years of active service as of this year and still finding itself as an exclusive home to killer titles such as Uncharted 3. Many analysts and gamers have been predicting the official announcement of the PlayStation 4 some time soon - and given that the Wii U is looming just around the corner but the "XBox 720" has little steam, it would be a great move to strike first. That said, 2012 will absolutely not be the year for the PlayStation 4's announcement, according to Kaz Hirai. Yes, THAT Kaz Hirai.“Andy (House) is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3,” Hirai said to reporters at the Consume Electronics Show. “I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that.” We can't blame him; even the PS2 was receiving new releases years in to the life of the PS3. Furthermore, the PS3 is still receiving strong titles in both retail and digital releases. Having scored the spot of "lead console" for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, the PS3 seems to have plenty of kick left in its step, and we'll be just fine waiting another year or two for the PlayStation 4.
