Fist Gameplay Footage of Assasin's Creed III Released

The American Revolution has an unexpected visitor

By Ben Harrison on 5/11/2012
One of the more hotly anticipated titles due to be released this year is the latest entry in the Assassin's Creed series, Assassin's Creed III. While the previous two games took place during the Crusades and the Italian Renaissance, the latest game is set to take place during the American Revolution. Many have been left wondering just how the gameplay of the previous games will translate to the middle of a full-on war, and Ubisoft has released a trailer showing just how it might happen.

For footage from a game that's labelled as pre-alpha, what's seen so far looks fantastic. As with their previous games in the series, Ubisoft completely nails the look and feel of the time and place represented in the game. This time around, players will take control of a half-English half-Mohawk Indian known as Connor Kenway, or Ratohnhaké:ton to the Mohawks. Connor definitely has the distinctive flourishes that the games are known for, as well.

For those of you who know your American history, guerrilla tactics like those used by Connor were fairly common among the various Indian tribes, while "proper military fighting" used by the British dictated that a man stand clear in the open and fire upon his target in regiments. Since standing around in large groups was such an integral part of warfare during the American Revolution, it'll be interesting to see how Connor manages to strike his target and get out safely. In the video, in more than once Connor kills a target surrounded by enemies. What new tricks lie in store for Connor to escape his foes? What would you like to see in the upcoming game?

This is looking fantastic. Can't wait to see more of this. In response to Quantifier, I'm not much of a history buff, but wouldn't the second line be shooting as the first reloaded? Or is that just something they do in movies now?

I think we aren't looking deep enough into the fight that Connor has placed himself into. If they really are staying true to the times, that means they'll stay true to the weapons. All he has to do is dodge the first volley of shots, and then Connor will have 20-30 seconds while they reload. That's a lot of time for a lot of carnage.

And did we also see the possible boss fight between him and a full-grown bear? Yes, please.
