What to Watch: Week of December 19 - December 25

Three season finales...but not much else. Still, we drummed up some goodies for ya

By Kaili Markley on 12/19/2011
Well, this week was a challenge, but I did my very best to come up with  something  for each night, though I admit some choices are a bit questionable. Consider it a little holiday gift from me to you. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy Kwanzaa everyone!

  •  The Mortified Sessions  - "Nick Offerman/Megan Mullally" (Sundance 8PM EST) -- "Real life married couple Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) share their childhood memories."
  •  Terra Nova  - "Occupation/Resistance" 2 Hour Season Finale (FOX 9PM EST) -- "In the two-hour Season Finale, the 11th Pilgrimage arrives in Terra Nova and the mysterious Phoenix Group in 2149 makes its move to pillage the past with the help of Lucas and Mira. Meanwhile, Jim and Taylor team up in a last stand against the Phoenix Group, a colonist makes the ultimate sacrifice and a decision is made that will change life in Terra Nova forever."

  •  Planet Earth Mini-Marathon  (Animal Planet 7PM - 11PM) -- If you've never seen this mind-blowing documentary series, do yourself a favor and tune in. Painstakingly constructed with out-of-this-world visuals, the series explores the little known regions of the earth in a way that is both humbling and inspiring, and beautiful enough to make the least outdoorsy of us want to strike out on an adventure. Except the episode about caves -- I'm really okay with never ever seeing any of those things in real life....  Mountains,  Caves,  Great Plains, and  Forests  air, and in that order.

  • South Park Christmas Marathon(Comedy Central 8:30-11PM EST) -- Join your favorite animated potty-mouths as they replay some of their favorite holiday episodes from years past, including  Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics,   Christmas in   Canada?, and   A Very Crappy Christmas.
  •  American Horror Story  - "Afterbirth" Season Finale (FX 10PM EST) -- "Season One concludes as Constance schemes to raise Tate's baby as her own."

  •  The League  - "The Funeral" One Hour Season Finale (FX 10PM EST) --"It's the season finale. The race is on for the Shiva and the Sacko. Taco teams up with Chicago Bears' Running Back Matt Forte and one of the guys is unable to manage his own team for the big game, leaving The League to figure out who will run it for him."

  •  Chuck  - "Chuck Versus the Grinch" (NBC 8PM EST) -- "Chuck and Sarah must stop an old enemy determined to destroy them as they prepare to celebrate Christmas."
  •  The Life & Times of Tim  - "Percy Davis Boulevard/Cool Uncle Stu Balls" (HBO 9PM EST) -- "Tim helps out with a ceremony for the Boss when he gets a city block named after him; Stu suspects his once-adoring nephew has changed his attitude since his Bar Mitzvah."

No new programming on tonight -- at least none that I could find. So in lieu of new stuff, I've assembled a list of some classic holiday movies airing this Christmas Eve:

  •  Home for the Holidays  (Lifetime 6PM EST)
  •  Dr. Suess' How The Grinch Stole Christmas - Animated Version  (ABC 8PM EST)
  •  A Christmas Story  (TBS 8PM and 10PM EST)
  •  It's A Wonderful Life  (NBC 8PM EST)

You could watch the Yule Log burn on loop On Demand or you could tune in to watch  Dr. Who: The Doctor, The Widow, and The Wardrobe,* or you could stumble over to your local theater to catch  The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo  (Dec. 20 release date),  The   Flowers of War  (Dec. 21),  Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol  (Dec. 21), or  The Darkest   Hour  (Dec. 25)...but whatever you do, have a healthy and happy, and a safe holiday season.

*"Evacuated to a house in Dorset from war-torn London, Madge Arwell and her two children, Lily and Cyril, are greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world."

I love Planet Earth. That show is amazing. I'm not sure what they haven't covered yet, but I hope we get another iteration of it sometime in the future.
